This has worked well on my Surly LHT with a 9-speed cassette in back. My only complaint is that the 30-teeth inner chainring might be too large. Serious hills in SF are not manageable for me with this and my lowest rear ring, which is 34. So I am in the process of trying to figure out how to switch in a 26 or 24 tooth small chainring. When I recently toured the Oregon/Ca coast I spent a lot of time in the lowest gear, which usually felt fine but I sort of like to know there is somewhere lower I can go if the going gets tough.

I think the outboard bearings are probably an improvement, although it may be psychosomatic, the difference isn't huge.

One thing that was surprising was that this is considerably heavier than my 20 year old 105 square taper triple. But this has a built in bottom bracket and that is super heavy on the old 105 crankset so I think altogether this is lighter.

Also, the instructions really stress tightening the bolts just right, so if you have a torque wrench you will want to use that, and if you don't you might want to have a mechanic do the final tightening. It's not the kind of thing you want to tighten improperly and have come off in the middle of nowhere.
