Mag Instruments Rechargeable Flashlight System #1 - 12V DC Cigarette Lighter Adapter, 110V RE1019 Review
Okay first I'm a cop with over 30 years experience as well as a long time police firearm & equipment dealer.........'nuff said.
First I assume if you are buying this light you are also going to purchase the new Terralux 1000 Lumen LED module as well, otherwise don't even waste your money. Without the Terralux LED modules old halogen Magcharger & Streamlight SL-20X flashlights are totally anemic by todays standards.
The best comparison for this light is to compare it to it only other real police baton light competitor the Streamlight SL-20X with 600 Lumen Terralux (orange peel) module. I currently own both of these. They both have their pros & cons, but for overall light output I would rate them very close despite the 400 lumen advertised difference.
MagCharger/Terralux 1000(825 OTF)Lumen LED Module (Smooth Reflectors) Pros & Cons (Compared to the SL-20X/Terralux 600(500 OTF)Lumen (Orange Peel Reflector):
Pros:
1) Slightly better at long distance 100+ yards.
2) Faster/Easier draw out of the charger vehicle mount at your feet when you're bailing out of your patrol car in a hurry.
3) Possibly longer runtime 2.5 vs. 1.5 hours according to the Terralux claims.
4) You will still be able to keep your strobe feature with the new Terralux 1000 LED Module.
5)Programmable switch for High/Medium/Low/Strobe preferences.
Cons:
1) Narrow Beam with virtually no spill (smooth reflectors). Not very good at short to medium range for putting out a flood of light. I have found thru experience that unless you're out in a rural area with wide open spaces it's better to have a wider flood than a narrow thrower. Generally most of your lighting needs will be 50 yards and closer in urban/suburban areas.
2) LED is "Cool/Soft" white as opposed to Nuetral/Brighter" White - Cool/Soft gives you slightly greater distance, but at a cost of color & contrast. Having tried both I prefer the nuetral (unless you're trying to read by it). The Streamlight/Terralux Lumen has a better overal nuetral/sharper color than the Magcharger/Terralux. You lose a lot of contrast & some color at night with soft light of the Magcharger/Terralux.
3) "Feels" Heavier & doesn't balance as well as the Streamlight especially if you ever had to use it as a Baton or hold it on a fixed position for an extended period of time.
4) Smooth slippery grip - Grip is way to smooth & slick. You will definitely want to add a rubber grip sleeve or some type of grip tape to improve on the grip.
5) It might just be a fluke with mine, but getting it to come on in "full bright" mode with the 1000 Lumen Terralux Module it's sometimes is a little finnicky. It often wants to come on in a "sub-bright" mode (not the normal medium or low) until I click it on & off a few more times and then it kicks into full power.
6)Switch - While not bad the SL-20X is arguably better.
Bottom line is if you want light with good spill & flood effect get the Streamlight/Terralux 600 Lumen LED. If you want a slightly better thrower, but with a much more softer & narrow beam get the Magcharger/Terralux 1000 lumen LED. Despite the 400 lumen advertised difference you will see little to no difference overall light output. Terralux claims this is due to the way they have to design the LED modules for the two different lights and the dimensions/space they have to work with. Personally I would have to say that OVERALL the Streamlight SL-20X with Terralux 600 Lumen module is the light I would rather have in my hand when doing a search for bad guys in a building or out in the woods as it throws a considerably wider brighter/nuetral beam at short to medium distances. Hopefully Terralux will come out with a newer 1000+ Lumen/2.5 Hour LED module for the Streamlight Sl-20X in the near future. If they were to do that the Sl-20X/Terralux 1000+ would probably definitely be the way to go.
