Exped inflatable mat SIM Lite 3.8 3.8 M green Review
Exped doesn't make these "officially" available in the US. I ordered mine from CampZ, an outdoor/adventure outfitter based in Europe. Mine shipped from Esslingen Germany. Shipping speed was incredible! I ordered this late Thursday night and had it the following Tuesday. If Monday hadn't been Labor Day, I think I would have had it then. This was standard shipping by the way, $7.99.Exped makes (or made) both the SIM Lite and SIM Lite UL. The Amazon listing has this as a SIM Lite but it's actually a UL (Ultra Light). I wanted the standard Lite as the UL uses a lighter outer fabric, making it slightly less puncture resistant. The warranty goes from 5 years to 2 years on the UL version too. For comparison I've been using an 8 year old Thermarest ProLite. The older ProLite used a thicker fabric on the bottom of the sleeping pad that seems almost indestructible. I recently picked up a new ProLite for my wife and sadly the bomber bottom fabric is no more. I would say the SIM Lite UL fabric seems very similar to the new ProLite fabric.
Overall fit and finish look to be excellent. The pad comes with a nice stuff sack that has an inner pocket for the included repair kit. I really like the use of Flat Valves on the Exped SIM pads, particularly the use of separate inflate/deflate valves. To my knowledge Exped is the only one using these.
I'm still a little skeptical, for two reasons. First, the 2 year warranty vs 5 years for their standard SIM pads (Thermarest is Lifetime). Now I know the term of warranty is never a direct indicator of how well something is built or how long it will last, but the added piece of mind of a longer warranty is always welcome. Second, the pad is made in Taiwan? This is my first Exped purchase and I guess I was just assuming the pad would read "Made in Switzerland". Of course made in Taiwan doesn't mean it's poorly made, in fact a majority of the time it's quite the opposite, it's just not what I was expecting.
So on to my first camp with the pad this weekend! I'll be sure to update this once I've had a chance to use it a few times.
