I've hit a variety of hybrid clubs in the past, including a Taylor Made rescue club. And typically I've liked them, but have had mixed results.

But after the shaft broke on my traditional 4-iron last year I happened across an Adams Idea a2 Hybrid 4-iron and bought it used (graphite, regular flex) - and Leapin' Lizards, this is a great club!

I've hit it at the range about 3 times so far (January in Seattle, so haven't taken it out to a course yet). And basically I've found it easier to hit than any 4-iron or hybrid I've had before (in 30+ years of playing golf).

I'm about a 15-handicap and I've never hit my long irons well. But off of the mat I'm hitting this nice and HIGH, consistently straight, and about 175 yards on the fly (and again, that's in damp, 50-degree weather with range balls). I expect in decent weather, with a better ball I'll get 185 on the fly. Also - that's swinging easy - at about 80% (I'm guessing if you hit your 4-iron much more than 185 you'll want the stiff shaft). When I hit it off a tee I get five more yards, even MORE height, and my natural draw kicks in a bit.

Also, the hybrid head is a bit larger than most I've seen - still nowhere close to the size of a even a small fairway wood head, but like slightly oversized hybrid head, which I like (I've always felt more comfortable staring down at a fairway wood head, than a long iron).

And I really like the way this club "feels" at address - that's a strange, unmeasurable quality, but one that I've always read is important, - golf being such a psychological game anyway. On a side note with regard to "feel" - I have a Cobra Speed LD driver, but from the first time I held it (I got it off eBay, sight unseen) I didn't like the "feel", or the look at address. And I don't hit it well. But, I borrowed another guy's Big Bertha Diablo recently - also a 460cc driver and it felt wonderful at address the first time - and I hit it great, and consistently. So - feel is important, but that also means that *you* might not like the feel of this hybrid even though I do.

Continuing on...I've never bothered having a 3-iron in my set, since I've never hit one well enough to justify it - but having hit this I'm definitely going to get the matching 3. And I've been in the market for new irons, so I might even get the idea 5-SW when the time comes. New, Adams irons are pricey, just a notch below Ping, Callaway, etc. and for some reason they don't have quite the same pro-line rep as those clubs, but my sense is that these irons are every bit as good as those brands for mid-handicappers and probably even better for high-handicappers.

Anyway - from what I've seen so far I defintely recommend this to anyone who's a mid handicap or higher. Awesome club - and much better than hybrids I've tried before (old Taylormade Rescue, PowerPlay, etc.)!
