Product Description
The Small Crab Pot was designed for the person who wants to catch the most crab with every pull. The exit door is half the size of the pot to make it easy to access the Crabs once you have brought the Crab Pot back to your boat. The Pot measures an impressive 20" diameter x 10" high. There are two doors for the crabs to easily fing there way into the Pot. The doors are made of Stainless Steel and allow the Crab to enter the pot, but not to leave the pot.Protoco 2 Tunnel Crab Pot, Small Review
This style of Pot is heavy duty and durable. These in my opinion are the best all around Pots to use, however they're much more expensive than the wire cage variety.Advantages: Traditional pots fish well for extended periods of time soaking unattended, this one stay's in place as it's well weighted. Crabs are well trapped and can't get out easily. The crab entrance on this style of crab pot are centered on the sides of the pot, with a ramped wire rectangular tunnel leading to the door. When the crab follows the short tunnel and enters the door he then drops off of the tunnel down to the floor of the trap. Since the door of the trap is raised up off of the bottom, it keeps the new crabs from easily blocking the door open.
Durability: If you buy quality pots and take care of them, they are going to last you a long time. If they get partially buried in the sand they won't easily deform or break when you pull them loose from the sand.
Disadvantages: These pots are the most expensive option. Quality doesn't come cheap and spending $90 to $160 per pot is typical depending on the size and construction. Traditional crab pots have raised doors, so it requires the crab to do a little bit of climbing and searching to find the entrance, so these traps don't fill as fast as the cage variety or rings.
With this design It is recommended tying a rope(prefer loop-ended 3/8") around the opposite side of the opening(instead of a harness), so that the crabs slide to the opening which reduces weight and drag VIA Ocean Current. The Small Size is by far the heaviest, from my experience it doesn't move or slide around at all which is nice. My Pot also came with the Bait Box on TOP, However I ended up moving it as The bigger crabs were getting on Top to eat rather than entering.
