Progear 275 Extended Capacity Power Tower Fitness Station Review

I'm really excited to own this tower. It sold through Amazon via Fogdog. I paid $170. There is a Weider Club 290 Power Tower that is the EXACT same construction as my Progear 275; the only difference is color and price. The Weider is red and grey and presently $204.23 on Amazon.

The Progear 275 shipped much sooner than the 7-10 business day window. The package arrived with a small, gnarly single hole in it, which apparently is typical for these cumbersome boxes. I immediately opened it and found all pieces wrapped in plastic covers and with the ends and corners thoughtfully protected with cardboard and packing tape. The hardware was bundled and rolled and secured with tape also. I opened the roll and found all of the nuts, bolts, washers and wrenches precisely organized in 1 through 8 step sections. Despite the hole in the box and some minor scratches in the product from the understandable jostling of shipment, the product was outstanding.

Assembly and the finished look of this tower was wicked easy and a sight to behold. It took me about 45 minutes to put together myself, no extra hands necessary. I used my own socket wrenches just for speed, but the included wrenches would suffice. I made one simple mistake with the single cross-member piece at the bottom of the unit. This piece is slightly tapered with welded support plates at the ends. It's almost an optical illusion to look at, with the tapering angle just subtle enough to not notice, but I caught it before finally tightening the entire unit. BE SURE TO FINGER TIGHTEN, then only snug the nuts and bolts within reason. Should you ever need to disassemble this product, you'll be in good shape for having spared the threads. Don't over tighten!

I at first set this unit on well-cushioned carpet, which obviously effects stability; however, I purchased some Cap Barbell equipment rubber (not foam) mats to remedy. For dips, if you're just becoming competent in the movement you're bound to tremble a bit, but if the machine is stable, and as you become better able to stabilize yourself, everything is smooth. For both leg-lifts and pull-ups, the machine does flex a bit, but it's nothing significant. Oh, for comparison, I am 6" and 210 lbs. I have wide shoulders and feared that the dip width might still be too far for a comfortable dip movement - not a concern. It's perfect with proper emphasis on the muscle and not the joints and rotator cuffs. For pull-ups, you have all the favorite options. Wide grip, pronated, suppinated, underhanded, close grip etc. Although, if you expect to place your hands directly together, it isn't possible. I prefer this design to a single straight bar, as it allows your head to rise through the movement in perfect alignment. You can face inward for pull ups, bending the knees if your as tall as me, and if you want to face outward, you"ll need to elevate the quads a bit, as the main support bar wont allow you to bend at the knees.

On another note: petite women will likely enjoy the dimensions of this product, too. The step up piece for climbing into the leg lift position serves it's purpose without becoming a major impediment to side-to-side leg motion. All handles (dip bar & push up) are foam lined for comfort but I find them to be a little too small in diameter; a padded tape will fix. However, the upholstery for the backrest and forearm rest has mediocre stitching; although, the padding inside seems durable, thick and comfortable for long term use. I'm going to look into reupholstering these myself, as the vinyl, plastic material used is thinly sewn and modestly stapled to the rests.

Aside from some minimal shipping scratches and somewhat sloppy application of the powder-coat paint, this is an excellent, ergonomically sound tower. I'm excited to take my workouts to a new level.
