I wasn't sure about this and it proved to be the right choice. I bought a twin size egg crate mattress cover for the top.I had an adult guest with a problem sleeping and a bad back that slept on it for several nights. They slept well and I enjoyed their visit!
NOTE: During assembly, save the long rail for last. You need the leverage to snap it into place-the canvas is very snug (I am sure that in time it will loosen naturally).
