HUB 3sp Sturmey Archer 36H W/TRIM KIT/SHIFTER W/ CABLE Review

This was used as a replacement for an old Shimano 3-speed hub that couldn't be re-built. It was slightly larger than the original, but that didn't seem to matter. Once you get yourself a qualified guide for building bicycle wheels, the job is fairly painless. I'm not a bike shop owner so I had to spend the better part of 2 days figuring out the proper spoke pattern.

That said... this Sturmey Archer hub is probably not as well built as the ones that came off the assembly line back in the mid 1900's. The spoke holes were not counter sunk, so you need to attend to that yourself. Also, the shifter lever is of poor quality so save the original if you still have it. Finally, the painted white metal housing was clearly not as strong as the stainless steel Shimano hub; a major drawback.

Overall, it was a good enough value considering it saved the old bike from being trashed. We'll have to see how well it holds up to regular use before committing to this 4 star review.
